What is the National Women’s History Museum?

Founded in 1996, the National Women’s History Museum is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational institution dedicated to uncovering, presenting, and celebrating the rich and diverse history of women’s contributions that have shaped American culture and society.

Our mission is to build the first ever national museum in Washington, D.C., dedicated exclusively to women’s history. It will be centrally located near the world’s most prestigious museums and monuments in our Nation’s Capital.

Why is this museum so important?

Our future is rooted in our knowledge and interpretation of the past. But we don’t know much about women of generations past because the history of their achievements and contributions has not been fully recorded or passed down. And if it hasn’t been recorded — it’s as though it never happened!

Women have been pioneers in science, medicine, government, law, education, social service, art, literature, business and more. We need to teach our children — both daughters and sons — that no history lesson is complete without accounting for the central role women have played in shaping our nation and our world. We are not rewriting history — we are adding to it. The National Women’s History Museum will inspire you and future generations to appreciate and build on the legacy our mothers have left us.

woman suffrage statue in capitol rotundaThe National Women’s History Museum was the driving force behind the raising of the Woman Suffrage Statue, a monument to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucretia Mott, from the U.S. Capitol Crypt to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. For the first time, these suffrage leaders are honored along- side our nation’s founders.

Why is your support so critical at this time?

To secure a prominent site in Washington, D.C., we will need the formal approval of several government agencies. The federal government, however, is not underwriting the cost of this museum with taxpayer dollars.

Instead, the National Women’s History Museum will have to raise no less than $150 million to build this museum privately — through the support of the American people. Before approval is granted, we need to demonstrate to Congress that we have your support and we have the ability to raise our full budget for construction.
