Paul Toback

Paul TobackMr. Toback is a transformational executive with a proven track record in leading organizations through start-ups, transition, and turnaround environments. He has a unique combination of private, public, state, and government experience.

Paul earned his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University where he graduated with distinction in  3 years and his JD degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1987 at the age of 23.  After receiving his law degree, he began his career as an associate in the corporate mergers and acquisitions department of Katten Muchin, a leading Chicago law firm.

In 1989 Paul joined Mayor Richard M. Daley’s staff as Executive Assistant and was later promoted to Director of Administration for the City of Chicago where he worked on many leading-edge programs such as urban recycling, green initiatives, privatization of public services, and hand gun buy-back programs to reduce urban violence and crime.
In 1993, Paul joined the White House as Director of White House Special Projects and, ultimately, as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Mack McLarty.  In his roles, he improved the overall function of the White House from creating the executive staff meeting to advising on policy and organization improvements.

In 1995, he returned to Chicago as Chief Operating Officer/Senior Vice President for Globetrotters Engineering Corporation where he led the company’s effort to develop multi-million dollar  international projects and where he led the privatization of Chicago’s lakefront concessions.

In 1997, Paul was recruited by Bally Total Fitness Corporation to develop and execute the company’s retail, personal training, strategic licensing, sponsorship, and franchising opportunities.  He grew those businesses from almost nothing to more than $170 million in annual sales.  Based on his success, Paul was promoted to Chief Operating Officer, President/CEO and ultimately, Chairman of the Board.  Under Paul’s leadership, Bally’s generated record sales and revenue, grew high margin products and services, significantly reduced annual expenses, and re-built the company’s go-to-market business model that restored credibility and customer trust. By the end of 2006 when he left Bally’s, Paul had transformed a 2002 $91 million loss into a $5.6 million profit.

Mr. Toback currently runs Telegraph Consulting that provides consulting services for start-up companies and private equity within Retail, Healthcare, and Franchising.

Paul is married with two children and resides in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
