Delaware was another of the northern states that was slow to accept women as voters, but the 1924 election of a woman to the legislature was earlier than most states.

 

Florence Hanby

    In 1924, Florence Hanby of Brandywine became the first woman elected to the Delaware General Assembly. During her time in office she campaigned to help victims of tuberculosis. She introduced the “Hope Farm Bill,’ which provided funding for the Anti-Tuberculosis Hospital at Hope Farm.
