GOVERNOR BILL RICHARDSON SHOWS SUPPORT FOR NWHM

A delegation of representatives from the National Women's History Museum (NWHM), the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL), and NWHM Coalition organizations took a whirlwind trip to Santa Fe on March 23 to participate in a press conference and photo op with New Mexico Governor and Democratic Presidential candidate Bill Richardson

The conference was held in the Cabinet Room of the State Capitol building in Santa Fe, New Mexico. NWHM President Susan Jollie and Senior Vice President Joan Wages represented the museum; President Robin Read and Chair Juanita Head Walton attended on behalf of NFWL. The Governor’s office also invited several other women legislators from New Mexico and around the country to attend the event.

At the press conference, which was held to address several issues pertaining to Women’s History Month, Governor Richardson issued a statement in support of the establishment of the National Women's History Museum in Washington, D.C. He noted that Congress has voted to create museums commemorating art, buildings, crafts, postal stamps, technology, textiles, space flight, and groups such as law enforcement officers, the military, victims of the Holocaust, African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans. However, there is no central museum collection that honors the achievements of over half of our population. A National Women's History Museum would do just that.

The Governor’s remarks were followed by brief comments from Susan Jollie of NWHM. Robin Read and Juanita Head Walton of NFWL were then given the opportunity to comment as well. State Senate Majority Whip Mary Jane Garcia provided the closing remarks. Ms. Jollie passed out NWHM’s signature “Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History” buttons for the whole group to wear during the photo session.

The National Women's History Museum is proud and honored to have the support of Governor Bill Richardson as the quest for a permanent site continues.
