NWHM PLANNED GIVING

What legacy will you leave?

Being recognized for the good we’ve done in our lifetime is a thought that all of us share at one time or another.

There are several ways to make a gift today that will ensure that the good work of the National Women's History Museum (NWHM) continues well into the future. The gift options vary, often providing you with significant tax savings.

CASH
A tax-deductible gift of cash may be your easiest and most beneficial option.

APPRECIATED SECURITIES
The NWHM accepts gifts of appreciated securities. Giving appreciated securities is an economical way to make a tax-deductible charitable gift and pay tribute to yourself or to a loved one in the process. Securities are put to work immediately whether designated for unrestricted operating support, to fund a specific project, or to be invested as a permanent endowment.

INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
If you are over the age of 70½, you can arrange a tax-free withdrawal from your individual retirement account (IRA) through December 31, 2007, if the money is donated directly to a charity such as the NWHM.

GIFTS OF PROPERTY
The NWHM accepts gifts of real property such as land or houses. Retaining a life tenancy in a primary residence to be later donated to NWHM gives you, as a donor, an immediate charitable tax deduction and the security of knowing family members will not be burdened with the sale of a home or property at some future date.

BEQUESTS
One of the simplest ways to make a donation to the NWHM is to name the Museum as a beneficiary in your will or trust. If you already have a will, a simple codicil can be added very easily. This allows you to perpetuate your personal dedication to our organization. A bequest can be set up as an endowment fund should the donor make such a request. Bequests serve as lasting legacies and will be recognized by the NWHM in perpetuity.

There are several ways to designate the NWHM as a beneficiary of a bequest, including Percentage of Your Estate, Specific Property, Residue of Your Estate, or Specific Dollar Amount. Your attorney or financial planner can provide more information about each of these choices.

CHARITABLE UNITRUSTS AND TRUSTS

  • Charitable Unitrusts – A Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) removes an asset from the donor's estate and designates a non-profit charity as the trustee or the irrevocable beneficiary. CRUTs provide donors with a current tax deduction and allow them to retain the income generated by the asset during their own (and sometimes an additional beneficiary's) lifetime. The remainder value of the trust, when it is dissolved on the death of the last beneficiary, supports the work of the NWHM.
  • Charitable Trusts – A donor creates a Charitable Trust by putting an asset in trust for a period of time so that the income generated by the asset benefits a charity. At the end of the time period, the asset is passed on to a named recipient. This is a great tax advantageous gift vehicle for passing an asset from one generation to another while also helping the NWHM.

Consult with your attorney or financial planner to learn more. If they require more information, they may call National Women's History Museum President Joan Wages at (703) 461-1920 or email us at info@nwhm.org.
