A final pre-Civil War paper published by a woman was the New Northwest , founded in 1857 by Oregon 's Abigail Scott Duniway . Although she was an active feminist, the New Northwest was a general newspaper, launched to support her large family when her husband became disabled. Duniway's style quickly became so popular on the Pacific frontier that her readership covered hundreds of miles throughout what was then called “the Oregon Country.” Duniway also arranged lectures for Susan B. Anthony and ultimately was regarded as the most important suffragist on the West Coast. Her paper was instrumental in women winning the vote in the Washington Territory in 1883, Idaho in 1896, and Oregon in 1912.
